An art that was greatly appreciated before has now died down and is not trendy. He does not transcend life by fasting, but he is fasting in order to survive.

The Metamorphosis and Other Stories

The story of the man who lives on hunger contains the realization which Kafka consistently develops until the inherent paradox dissolves into two parts — the part of fasting and that of the elemental life force.

He eventually dies, and people bury him and place a panther in the cage. Even though everyone knows who this man is, he is a very sad unhappy man. Furthermore, the ritual in which the impresario forces the hunger artist to break the fast is humiliating and unpleasant.

He was attended by teams of watchers—usually three butchers—who ensured that he was not eating in secret. The drive to fast is stronger in the first part, and his art brings him success and even moments of enjoyment. The misunderstanding of his very art is the cause of his exhaustion. I think the hunger artist at points feels really constrained by the fasting limits that are put on him, which creates more menace, tension, and relentless motion.

He suffers in his cage, the symbol of his lack of freedom, but he prefers to starve for the eventual attainment of spiritual freedom rather than accept any of the pseudo-salvations of the realm of the "butchers" — that is, the world around him.

The more the story progresses, the clearer it becomes that this is a parable of the author's spiritual quest, as well as of his relationship with the insensitive world around him. Thus we have only a vague sense of something unusual. In each town, the hunger artist chooses a public location and puts himself on display in a locked, straw-lined cage, where he fasts for periods of up to forty days.

Upon closer inspection, the overseer discovers the hunger artist buried in the straw, near death. Despite his fame, the hunger artist felt dissatisfied and misunderstood. The pride the hunger artist has leads to his dissatisfaction in life, and in the end his death.

The artist is able to clearly separate his needs and desire and has been indifferent towards food for he has yet to. In truth, however, the hunger artist is miserable only because he knows he could have fasted longer and that his supposed fans actually hate him.

Being snared in the logic of their minds, however, they never see beyond one and the same suspicion: The artist lives in the cage which symbolizes the demarcation between the artist and the people.

The panther and the artist, both are trying to achieve their wishes. Here the leopard signifies a positive life-affirming force opposing the hunger artist's impulse towards death.
